Mitsubishi 4WD Club Trev's Tip 22.

Trev’s Tips

Recalling Recalls

It’s taken me a long time to get around to writing this particular Trev’s Tips and by now many of you may already know about it but here it is anyway. Actually this one comes from some information that Keith P gave to me many moons ago and has to do with an apparent dust sealing issue on the current shape Pajeros. I hope that I get my story right here but I seem to recall Keith being a little disappointed with the dust seals (particularly the back door) on his latest car so he approached the issue with his Mitsubishi dealer.

Apparently the poor dust sealing ability of the Pajero had already been recognised by
Mitsubishi who had a reThe Mitsubishi 4WD Owners Club of WA Inc.placement kit organised for any customers who mentioned it to them. Consequently Keith had his car completely resealed at Mitsubishi’s expense and to my knowledge has not had any reoccurrence of the problem since.

This is definitely something worth keeping in mind if you ever become concerned about your own car. Since talking to Keith about this problem I have also seen it mentioned in a 2nd hand Pajero review article that was run by 4wd Monthly and also in a forum on the Explore Oz web site.

It was this information that got me thinking about other common problems that may have been recognised by Mitsubishi that have warranted replacement kits to be made available or perhaps even complete recalls. Seemed like the best spot to get some of this info was the net so one quite evening I sat down at the computer and typed Pajero recalls into Goggle. I sat back quietly confident that this might return only 1 or 2 hits at most because lets face it the Pajero is a pretty good car. Well you can imagine my surprise when I had 45000 hits.

For the next hour I waded through many sites reading any information I could find relevant to official Mitsubishi factory recalls on the Pajero, of which there were quite a few.

Thankfully may of the recalls related to overseas Pajero models such as the shogun or Montero. Some of the common problems that I read about are listed below for your curiosity but some are worth investigating as they do relate to Australian complaint vehicles.

Here they are

Crack in the front upper brake hose. This could result in a loss of fluid and reduced brake effectiveness. Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

2) NM Pajero with ABS; accumulator diaphragm in brake booster manufacturing fault which causes lose of power assistance in the brakes. Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

3) Crank Shaft pulley bolt is too thin and may fail or rattle loose. Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

4) Roof rack mounts for the Pajero Sports roof rack may not secure it.  Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

5) Brittle tow bar tongues which may snap causing the trailer to become disconnected.  Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

6) Red button on seat belt buckle may chip and crack which can interfere with the release and capture of the clip.  Relates to Aust cars so check this one out.

7) Pitman arm may corrode and become weakened which if snaps will cause loss of steering.  Relates to some Australian imported shoguns.

8) Faulty tank levelling valve which may result in very full fuel tanks in cars parked on sloping ground to overflow resulting in potential fire hazards.  Mainly relates to overseas Montero's.

As you can see from this there are a number of problems which have resulted in Mitsubishi recalls to cars for repairs but interestingly I could not find any information on the net about the dust seal problem that Keith spoke of.  This leads me to believe that Mitsubishi have only publicised the recall of faults which pose obvious safety issues for occupants.   With this in mind it is quite feasible that Mitsubishi have a range products to rectify other non safety problems with Pajeros etc.  It would be worth asking the question to dealerships if you have concerns with your vehicles.  You never know, with a bit of persistence it may be a problem they already know about and can fix at no cost to you.

By the way if you think your Toyota, Ford, Holden, Nissan or any other car is exempt from these recalls then do what I did and type it into Goggle and see what the response is.  Sorry to  tell you but from the quick bit of searching I did other manufactures have just as many and more recalls for their vehicles.

This is definitely something worth having a look at.

Till next time

Happy 4wding
