MCBEG at Wungong Regional Park

On the last warm Sunday in March (the 30th) 32 Club members with their families gathered at Nettleton Road service station for a working bee in the Park. We drove in convoy to the disused airstrip where we spent the day fencing, collecting a little rubbish and doing a plant list under the supervision of DEC staff, TonyE and John. An area of about 4 hectares of degraded land beside the strip was fenced off. This will be planted on our next visit in July with indigenous trees and shrubs. We were joined by Ray of Eureka4WD who contributed to our efforts and has now offered sponsorship to the Club for ongoing work in this location.

The goal was achieved mid-afternoon so that those who needed to return to Perth early could do so while some of us remained to enjoy a leisurely cuppa.  The much appreciated sausage sizzle was provided by DEC as thanks for our
effort. Wungong Regional Park is closed to the general public and the perimeter is fenced. The reason is to conserve the biodiversity of the Park, to prevent further degrading of the tracks and to enable DEC to attempt to remove feral animals such as cats, foxes and pigs.

While we were working several young boys on trail bikes sped along the airstrip near us. They were reminded that the Park was closed and that they should not be there. They maintained ignorance but left without further delay.
Near the time we were leaving three quad bikes with older drivers came by but did not slow or stop for us to speak with them about their illegal entry.

Later in the afternoon we packed up and returned home feeling pleased with the success of our efforts. See photos.

Post script
Within four days of this work hooligans rammed the gate and destroyed some of the fence. Someone in the district will know who these men are because it is likely they would brag of their cleverness. It is hoped someone as offended as us will report them to the CrimeStoppers.  There was an article by Rob Robson in the West Australians Motoring pages on Saturday April 19 (page 19) about our work and the damage done by these hooligans.
